Wow! It's been a while since I have written and I must say I miss all of you! We're back from a 2 week vacation which was incredible. I would love to say that I adhered to our healthy lifestyle but I am a bad liar so I'll tell you I failed epically! Even though I ate gluten, I didn't feel as bad as I used to. Maybe it takes time to build up in the system? Although, I can't say that eating it, I was symptom free. I was more gassy and a little bloated. But, especially on the cruise, everything is right at your fingertips so it is hard to resist. Brad did much better than I did but I am getting back on track.
Altogether, I gained 11 pounds! Yes, you read that right. It's an 11 not a 1! The average person gains 1.2 pounds per day on a cruise so I guess I am above average:) However, after just one day of being home, I lost 4 of those pesky pounds. I attribute it to the abundance of salt we ate. We eat relatively little salt at home and we could tell how salty the food was eating out. Today, it is day 6 of bring home and I am happy to report I am 7 pounds down with only 4 more to go! My body is in detox mode and I can feel it.
As Brad mentioned we don't drink enough on vacation. I am drinking lots and lots of water to rehydrate and flush all the crap out of my body. While we were away, I really missed my morning breakfast. While away, I tried to stick with eggs, bacon and fruit but the pancakes on the ship were just so soft and fluffy I couldn't resist. BUT I am enjoying my morning yogurt, gluten free cereal, chia seeds and fruit back at home. I know the pancakes and other flour products made me sluggish and threw my blood sugar off so I am enjoying the healthy eating and all the positives it brings.
Fiber was definitely a problem on the road also as Brad mentioned. We brought the chia seeds but I'll admit that I forgot to use them all the time. Also, we didn't eat enough salad and veges. Unfortunately, the vegetables were usually drowned in salt and butter and cooked down loosing their nutrients. We went to Cape May at Disney for Alyssa's birthday dinner and the veges were so salty I couldn't eat them. I'll have to plan better for the next trip. Cruising, although we absolutely love it, is hard food wise because you can't get the greek yogurt for breakfast and raw, fresh veges for salads. You are captive to what they serve. However, the food was delicious, we ate things we normally wouldn't at home and enjoyed ourselves. The 11 pounds were worth it for me!
I just started reading "Wheat Belly" by Dr. William Davis. It was recommended by my friend that showed my gastro problems were due to gluten. When we told her we weren't eating flour, potatoes or rice, she was curious why. This book is an eye opener. I'll post more about it as I read more.
Bottom line: modern day wheat is killing us and we need to wake up and do something about it before it's too late!
